Teaching

Teaching Philosophy

As a teacher, I believe that every student, regardless of their age or background, has the ability to become a musician. It is my job to provide a safe and welcoming environment for my students to learn and grow. I believe it is important for my students’ learning to take place in such an environment so that they are free to be themselves and experiment with music and make mistakes. As a teacher, I want to create a space that supports each of my students’ musical participation and enjoyment. My goal as a teacher is to teach my students to become excellent cellists and develop a love and appreciation for classical music.

Teaching Experience

Teaching has always been an integral part of my musical life. I have 10+ years of experience teaching private and group cello lessons as well as orchestra and chamber coaching. During my graduate studies in Rochester, NY, I was on faculty at the Eastman Community Music School as well as a cello teaching assistant at the Eastman School of Music. I am currently on the cello faculty at the Vancouver Academy of Music School and teaching privately at my studio in the lower mainland both in-person and online.

Testimonials

  • Susan Krauss

“I knew the moment I met Trisha that she was the perfect teacher for me. She is patient, understanding, encouraging and fun! She is extremely talented and she makes you feel like you are too! She takes the time to figure out any issues you are having and she offers multiple solutions. She has the perfect personality to be a teacher. I loved every lesson I had with her and she will always be my #1.”

  • Oliver Wang

“Trisha is a great teacher. I started my private in-person cello lessons with Trisha two years ago when I entered 6th grade and had no experience with the cello. In the following spring, in-person lessons were changed to Zoom lessons because of the pandemic. I have learned a lot in the past two years, whether it was in-person or Zoom lessons. Trisha often explains cello techniques using the things I already know and makes the techniques very easy to understand and practice. Trisha is very positive throughout the past two years, even during remote lessons; I never feel bad when I made mistakes during the lessons. I have enjoyed every lesson and have improved a lot. I believe I’m the best cellist in my school orchestra.”

  • Maria Oxamendi

“Trisha’s dedication, talent, and passion for the cello was always present in every lesson. She connects with every child in a special way and creates an atmosphere that helps her students fall in love with the instrument. I was so happy to see how proud my son was of his progress throughout the Eastman Preparatory Program with Trisha. In a difficult time of the pandemic and dealing with distant learning, Trisha did such an amazing job as a teacher.”

  • Pallavi Patnaik

“Trisha is a wonderful music teacher and an excellent person. She worked very patiently with my 10-year-old son and helped him develop an interest in music. She was equally effective in person as well as online. She would be a delight for any aspiring student”

  • Jenny Chen

“I was 61 when I started learning cello from Trisha Doo and I have to say she is one of the best private music teachers I’ve ever met (I have met many in my life as a parent of 3 children who took music lessons) Trisha custom made her teaching plan for me based on my physical condition (I have issues with the heaviness of the bow), my music background (I play the piano so I can read music) and my emotional state (I was nervous about picking up a new instrument).  She was very patient and encouraging that made me feel I can learn cello at my own pace so I can truly enjoy the cello and the learning experience. Trisha knows her craft very well and is enthusiastic about sharing her knowledge and skills with her students.  She sees me as not just a cello student but as a person who has the potential to develop a lasting appreciation for cello and music as a whole. I’m very thankful to have Trisha as a teacher to start my cello playing path.  She was the one that gave me the confidence that I can play such a beautiful instrument even at my age.”

  • Xiao Wang

“As a parent, all of my interactions with Trisha were very smooth. Trisha has been extremely professional. Occasionally, I overheard a little bit when my son was taking remote lessons in the living room - it appears he was practicing really well and having fun at the same time!”
